On the rainy night of March 2nd, 1944, the overnight steam-power freight train 8017 from Battipaglia to Potenza, did not pass through the railway station at Balvano in southern Italy.
The station master there was not overly worried.
But later at 5:10 that morning, when one of the crewmen from the freight train staggered into the railway station, the Station Master knew something was seriously wrong.

🕵️Wait wait, before you watch the video guess what was inside the tunnel?
Of all the places they broke down just happened to be in the tunnel with engines blocking both ends.... yeah... they say this was an 'accident' but makes you wonder if it was mass murder. Wedding rings, gold teeth, watches, shoes, cloths, cash. ... lots of motives.
Someone causing confusion and delay
Something unusual Or maybe some hungry men OR some hostiles that stopped the train and killed them
Thomas the tank engine
Rick Astley
Ya mum
520pfff thats nothing for 1944
Nice vid
This is the work of an enemy stand!
1:30 seconds of advertising on a 7 minute video? You're worse than cable tv now.
The title of this video is a click bait af. don't bother watching as the answer is the noxious fumes, from burning low grade coal, given of by the trains engine.
Anyone else who has seen the WoWP trailer immediately think “BF-109”
Im at 4:33 and i bet it was the low quality coal in the lokomotives that killed the people because they couldnt breath anymore
Smh
Toxic gas?
sponser ends at 1:25
The music is kinda scary
Carbon Monoxide poisoning sucks.
me when train is die 😭
This is why you dont overload a train!
Well, the victims of the Balvano train disaster (Disastro di Balvano) is still disputed, I've seen some official sources say 517, others say 521, recent ones say more than 600. Just imagine how many died, even the survivors were disabled for life.
I've seen the Disasters of the Century version: The Black Market Express. One of the survivors survived because he had his scarf on his mouth and nose, which act as a filter that saved his life, but his hair turned grey as a result of the poisoning. Another survived because he slept inside a thick military cloth, which also acted as a filter. Another survived, but suffered heavy brain damage and lost his wife and son. A nearby chapel, built by a relative of two of the victims, now commemorate the disaster.
The video's also not accurate, the train was almost entirely stuck inside, not outside the tunnel, with only two carriages outside. There are 3 crew members inside each locomotive, all except one were killed by the fumes. There are two brake men, one killed by the fumes and the other managed to tell the news of the Disaster
Also the train's not full freight, it is a mixed train and double-headed due to the weight, the engines were FS Class 480 and FS Class 476. Both are steam engines
To this day Henry still has flashbacks of what happened in that tunnel
CO or CO2?
So sort of army or bombs
this video is scuffed
Maybe an ambush killed them
That dude is eating a sausage using his sword Lmfao
Abcdef
"Thomas was only following orders"
Must of been the work of an enemy stand
Umm a killer
"Odorless" - Technically yes - if you've ever been close to a steam train of that era: definitely not.
You will find the same sort of disaster used in the plot line of Atlas Shrugged.
2 unskippable ads?
Wanna bet 8ts about the "bridge worm" from trevor henderson?
I could never have seen the tunnel without the giant red arrow, thanks
Why you have that subs cause your videos are so good
What inside tunnel
Ok, this was great, but as I am a railway enthusiast, why did the head engine have pistons on its tender (the car with coal and water in it)
Carbon Monoxide
I think that italy should have used 5 S160 locomotives or B&LE H1-G
Click bate title
"They feared it might damage Italy's fragile morale and over shadow the war effort against the Nazis." Uhh... Italy was part of the Axis. The Nazis were their allies.
They changed teams
co2 poisoning
do a vid on columbine
I think the tunnel was full of tunneln't

Blame the fat conductor. It wasn't Thomas's fault.
1:25 content
Why is it always carbon monoxide
7:02
At first, I thought it crashed in the tunnel or exploded or had a collision with another train...
6:39 connecting rods on tenders
there was probably a wall there
The steam from the train could have killed the engineer too
Humans are so fragile... The WWII era had so much death in such a short period of time. But these people were simply trying to get away from it but, lost it all anyway. Sorry, the empathy in me gets pretty broken up about stories like these.
Haven't heard of this story before, but could immediately guess it was carbon monoxide poisoning from just the title and thumbnail Tragic nonetheless
6:55 why did they make the twins separate
Gas
1:25 to skip retarded ad
I thought it was going to be man bear pig
I find it interesting that locomotives in Europe had different sides for the drivers, even being from different countries I thought that would be something made the same all over.
tunnel must have had a poor design, some tunnels if I think where designed so air would flow through them.
5:57 most casual walking ever
im guessing it was cause of a gas leak
i was kinda right it was because of gas but not because of a leak
I’m guessing it was an animal or something
Train accident
Wait, wasn't Italy with the Nazis? Aka axis power?
Oh I Acctually guessed it!! They died from the carbon dioxide and since they had no windows or vents they all have died
Those poor Italians were so close to living in liberated Italy.
This gave me goosebumps!
Well now I know that my birth day is on the day 500 people died
Save yourself 8:30 minutes , it was carbon monoxide 🤦♂️
4:57 The worst gases are always odorless
Chuck Norris?
Is that tunnel and railway still in use today?.
Anyone know the music...?
pretty sure it was russia's greatest love machine
Oompa loompas
Basically the land version of Medan.
I was gonna guess either CO2 poisoning, or the rest of the mountain
they should have wear like masks
this wasn't a tunel this was paint spraid on a mounten to lock like one but if you try to drive trought you drive fullsped against the wall
soo sad im crying :((((((((((((((((((((
and Im Italian
Plot twist it was just gta 5 players trying to stop the train
If a tunnel filled with enough carbon monoxide to kill 520 people. Imagine if it was worldwide. And it’s still happening
I wondering if this tunnel is still around today? That'd be a good spot for a paranormal investigation (as long as it's no longer in use)
Video starts at 1:27
100 less and this is a meme
Simple History: 520 people died because of poisonous gas. My Little Brother trying to teach a class: Alright guys, so today we are going to be talking about how 520 people died because someone farts were deadly
In the tunnel is: impostor
Guess what was in the tunnel :) Barack obama
I wonder if this was the inspiration for that passage in Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, where an old coal-burning train gets sent into a tunnel without proper ventilation.
I was thinking about that too. In that part of the book a military train smashed into the passenger train in the tunnel because the passenger train was stalled.
I remember when simple history got to the video when it started
Me too
Coyote Peterson: sees this video Also Coyote Peterson: *Y E S*
They should’ve sent a gas mask team or something.
I made my own helmet with a bucket. From mono lottablog
Oh... I thought might have been an object blocking the tracks, and the train collided with it at high speed, killing a bunch of people. Was not expecting that.
Video starts at 1:23 .
what is the tunnel's name?
Something like this could happen in Thomas, but it would only take the narrator to say: "But luckily no one was hurt."
lucky no one was hurt :)
Wait, is this the Zanetti train?this sounds a little different you should cover that too
Waits insde the tanell to kill pasengers this is iposebly how
