*Quick Update* - Measuring Boost the CORRECT Way!

I was so excited to see that it was making real boost (low though) that I had to make this really quick video. It's my style of posting videos, it's just genuine excitement. The fact that the S/C made some boost doesn't mean that the engine is more powerful. It means that it produces pressure above the vaccum pressure of the engine, which is pretty good news. From this point we can start improving the overall performance.

  • You need an intake fan leading to the impeller. The scale of the supercharger is low enough that it's impeding airflow and efficiency.

  • I think the problem is that you are losing more HP because of that gearbox since you need more force or power in order to convert it to speed of the rotation of impeller... but that speed is not coping up to provide more HP to the engine in order to replace the borrowed HP... if your procharger (yup centrifugal supercharger) takes 1HP in order for it to function it must provide more HP let's say 2 HP so that subtracted by 1HP due to the borrowed HP so you have 1HP gain.   • .6 psi obviously is very low. I believe the supercharger is taking more power from the engine then it can add. I think this supercharger needs to be spinning at 300,000RPM to have any meaningful boost. Great to see this type of work though very interesting.

  • This serves no purpose as you cannot actively change the fuel/air mixture while you force air through a carburetor... the carb has to be on the inlet of the supercharger

  • Still not measuring in the right place. They call it manifold pressure for a reason. Pressure/vacuum should be read between the throttle blade and the cylinder head (the manifold).

  • To be honest I'm not sure if this engine running such a small supercharger is gonna run it properly anyway. I would look into making a bigger electric supercharger run by a big R/C engine with tons of torque and high rpm, something substantial from a drone perhaps.

  • It's only going to show much boost with no load on the engine. You need to create some type of load on the engine to make it "build" boost. It works the same way with full scale engines and forced induction.

  • Getting better! Wonder how the S/C flow rate is calculated and at what rpm such a small unit really gives boost. Also wondering about the clearance between housing and impeller blades. Finally a small note, hope I'm not offending, att least low speed impellers actually turns the other way than you expect. Have had me fooled.

  • I have an idea, how about removing the dummy cam wheel? That engine is just a single cam disguised as a twin cam, removing the dummy cam wheel would eliminate at least a small bit of parasitic drain, making it a smoother and potentially more powerful motor.

  • I think that honestly for a centrifugal supercharger of this size you need to have it spin way way faster to really see meaningful boost. Since its basically just a turbo being powered by a pulley, you probably need alot more speed. Even full size turbos can spin at 150k rpm or more.

  • I believe that the fuel pressure is lower than the measured boost with your setup. You're basically trying to overcome the boost with it's own pressure.

  • Great build. I wonder with the slightly different density ratios at this scale, increasing the flywheel size could be an easy try. I'm sure you've at least thought of it, but I think you need to remove the charge fuel charge tube system all together and just use a standalone pump. If so, I think that could greatly help overall. That and or get rid of the silicone charge tube and go with something solid, just to see if expansion is a possible issue.

  • Can´t you just put an one way velve on the fuel hose so the pressure cant push the fuel back to the tank and remove the tank pressure hose completely? i mean the air moving through the carburettor should create an venturi effect witch draws the fuel through the hose by creating an under pressure in the fuel hose. and btw to me it sounds a bit rich. pushing to much fuel in when creating an over pressure in the tank?

  • The engine needs to under load to produce real meaningful boost. That tiny supercharger should be turning 150-200,000 or more rpm, lose the bearings and run bronze sleeve bushings. You may be able to get away with a drip oiling system for it, but a tiny oil pump would be better in the long run. The draw through should work much better but you might need a bigger carb to reach full potential... Just watch out for backfires, pressurized fuel and air mixture can turn parts into projectiles! Be safe!

  • You may find that you'll get a higher rpm from the charger if you create a secondary one and feed the exhaust through it to spin the drive shaft of the original cgarger. This system is used in full sized cars as the crank shaft can never create a high enough rpm for the charger and gearing is an annoying method it also adds the benefits of the charger being less complex. You have done an amazing job and should be very proud. Machining you own charger is a very complex and difficult task let alone instilling it and it working. Well done!!

  • So now that you cam watch the boost curve, we see it's rising with rpm. If a larger diameter compressor wheel can't be installed & try angling the vanes so that it is closer to parallel with the volute. Also there is something to be said for staggering the vane height for more low end boost. Never stop building your dreams!

  • I actually built parts for a mini dyno and still have CAD for the complete setup if you are interested in testing the power output. Basically just have it coupled to an electric motor with a load like a heating element on the output and measure the power.
