  • I do not agree google is getting "greedy". As you said, google allows sites to not allow snipets. The sites that allow them, like the NY times, actually pay google for it. For example, covid cases numbers, they are available on govt websites, or the cdc for examples, google does not need ny times. Instructions usually don't include all the steps on the snippet, so people will click it. And youtube videos views still count outside of youtube (and the creator can disable the "outside of youtube" view function

  • Didn't Google at one point have sponsored links at the top of the first results page? Like, the sites paid to be promoted as the recommended source for what you searched? It's been about ten years since I paid much attention to if a link was sponsored or whatever it had said before and just click around to collect various sources for better accuracy these days depending on my searches.

  • While I dislike google as much as anybody, they're still just a billboard. Let me explain. Say I go and look up Italian restaurants in my area. I click on the second one. Not the first, third, or fourth. I like the second one, so I decide that's the one for me. What the restaurants want is money for my click, whether I click on them or not. It would be like if instead of the restaurants going to the billboard company and saying we'll give you X amount to put our advertising on your billboard, we want YOU to pay US to put our advertising on your billboard, AND we get all the money that advertising generated. Also, a lot of people download their content/videos onto google itself. So if you click on a video, and it doesn't take you to youtube, check the link. :)

  • Google does need to give better compensation for the content they snipped. However, I’m not sure about the details and the specific of the Australian bill. From another Australian FIbothr, he said that the bill also includes giving big news companies information about how the FIboth algorithm works and such. That means small independent FIbothr would be at a disadvantage against the big news corporation, which is bad.

    MasGuardianMasGuardian3 tuntia sitten
  • None of that is how google works. They don't make any money from you using their service. Google only gets paid if their adds generate a click. The snippets massively increase site traffic to the sites that are featured. I mean being a snippet is orders of magnitude more effective than advertising. Google has no way of monetizing the snippet. They only get paid if you go to the website. Then Google pays the website for the add views, and the advertiser pays Google. If you work with Google they can't make money unless you do. That is what makes them so powerful. They are free to devote all of their time increasing everyone else's profits secure in the knowledge that doing so will increase their own.

    Christopher GibbonsChristopher Gibbons3 tuntia sitten

  • Some of those google examples weren't exactly true. Specifically the Covid and the weather example. Both of those use API's built by the providers for the exact purpose Google is using it. They aren't just taking the data off the site, they are using an API to get that data. I'm no fan of google recently but let's be honest about our examples.

  • Yeah I’ve looked up lots of things and got the answers right away and never had to click off google, but I definitely agree that that is a problem but at the same time if they allow that to happen then it is what it is, because there is a lot of other websites that don’t even get that chance. So maybe they should all say google can’t do that. Because if someone else isn’t willing to replace them then they probably wouldn’t loose their place in line.

  • Google should pay. If they're going to profit off of information provided by other people then they should be paying those people for their work. They should have to adhere to the same rule set as everyone else, but they have money and in this world money is power. Those with money tend to break the rules and get away with it. A lot of the rules we have were created by those with money to control those without it.

  • @Ann I actually cook pancakes that way :) The trick is, you have to make it in a pan similar to a wok (with a round smooth bottom) and the batter needs to be a little bit runnier (something between pancake and tempura). The reason for that is, it is much easier to get the batter quickly into the pan (because you can just quickly dip it in the batter), plus you end up with some very thin pancakes with a nice crust around :)
