Rebuilding a historic sailing yacht - Fitting the final planks! (EP94)

In this episode we hang the last of the regular planks and start making “shutter planks” - the planks that fill a gap between already fastened areas of planking above and below. These require more careful patterning, but are extremely satisfying to hammer into place if they fit properly - but will they ?!
Before we hang the very final plank (the Whisky Plank!) I trim the plank ends flush with the transom, which really visually transforms the boat. Finally the Whisky plank is hammered into place, and the crew celebrates with a well earned wee dram.

  • Thanks to you Leo, and all who spilled blood, sweat and tears, Tally Ho will live on for the foreseeable future. She will most likely be sailing the oceans long after most of us have "shuffled of our mortal coils". Your legacy will live on, and your name will for ever be tied to a boat called "Tally Ho" Cheers.

I have done maintenace and stuff on a few boats but I am in awe of the knowledge, craftsmenship and leadership on display here. Plenty more work to do on Tally Ho but the end of a very important chapter. Can't wait for the next two years!

  • Im sorry if asking a silly question, but how will the boat be waterproof? Arent there very small gaps between the planks?

  • Just gonna throw this right out there - could be the brandy talking - take it accordingly: Channel's name is "Sampson boat Co". You have her dimensions, and (I'm assuming) her blueprints. Going from the wooden disaster I witnessed in the first installment to what you've so far accomplished, there would seem to be about a flea's "gaseous release" of difference between a restoration of this magnitude & a full-on build from scratch...

Sorry I was going to ask this sooner but was still drinking the Whisky. God I love watching these videos. Great entertainment and then they even suggest you have a drink. What the heck more could an old man ask for... Don't have to bother Leo who I hope is out enjoying a couple of days off. But if someone knows tell the dummy.

  • Leo and ALL the crew, I'm damn near speechless. Besides watching the videos and the pleasure I got watching them, I want to thank you all for the work, the untold hours spent hand selecting your timbers, the hours spent maintaining your tools, sharpening your plane blades, making jigs, patterns, fasteners, casting and all the unseen labor that proceeds and intermixes with a project like this. Many can appreciate the work they see but few know the back story and back labor needed just to get to this stage. One to the next stages, the faring fun, the decking, mechanics, wiring, rigging and so much more! I dream of being there to see her launched, Ray.

So much effort, time, explanations(which flew over my head but seemed to make sense), fun, camaraderie, humanity. Loved the drama, the music, watching the craft of boatbuilding. Wow. • The fitting and celebration of the "Whisky Plank" was a moving moment for me and I have nothing to do with "Tally-Ho", other than as an open-mouthed observer. For Leo and the crew, it must have been so satisfying, such a proud, emotional moment for them all and well worth the hangover. That final plank is such a huge milestone in the restoration. While having the entire process on video is fantastic, I hope Leo has still images of the most memorable occasions. The video archive will be a great resource for future boatbuilders but you can't frame a video and put it on the wall.😁 Cheers for now,🥃 Dougie. P.S. Having Rosie there on the day was nice, very appropriate.👌😁
