Lewis Hamilton is still yet to sign for Mercedes in 2021. But does Mercedes need Lewis Hamilton to sign? Does the threat of George Russell coming through offer the team a stronger hand in the negotiations?
In this video I take a look at these things and investigate whether Lewis is worth it for the team.

  • The issue with not having Hamilton in 2021 would be that, although Russell could potentially win a championship in a dominant car like Mercedes, having Lewis in the seat provides an important level of off track expertise and consistency that could be crucial to developing the 2022 car

  • While a lot of people here saying just hire russell ppl forget how spa vs shakhir 2020 fold out. Hamilton can make his own decision to stay out with the tyres. Plus as a team Mercedes need to calculate the probability of points to make them WC Championship. If bottas can step up, hiring russel is a sensible move. 2021 is tne proving ground for bottas.

Not individuals, It's an overpriced spread, Vettel took a cut to regroup, and I wish him the best with Aston Martin, Mercedes Benz is one of the top selling cars on the street,? It was the whole team that made it happen. Not one person? Or politics! So everyone needs to move on ! And we the Fans can Love F1 again, and so will all of you...👍🍾🥂🏎🏎 ...😎🌵🇺🇸🇮🇹

  • You seems to have missed the most important point. F1 is showbiz, far more than it is sport, and Mercedes is NOT a racing team primarily unlike most of its competitors. Mercedes makes its money from selling road cars. The brand had an image problem in that it was generally regarded as an old man's car, or a taxi. Lewis has made the brand aspirational for a demographic who would not have considered it a few years ago. No other driver in any motor sport has the following to to that. George Russell is an excellent driver, and may well be the Lewis Hamilton of the future, but Mercedes needs to sell cars today and tomorrow, not just in five or ten years time.

Yes they need Lewis, yes they must therefore pay him what he is worth, while GR is no doubt an excellent driver and a future WC, he has years to develop the kind of consistency and point scoring ability that is a given in a seven times world champion.

  • Easy: NO! Thanks to the thing i hate of f1: the car is 90% driver 10 unlike motogp where there were 9 different winners from A to B teams and even C teams. I think Hamilton is a great driver but if there would’ve been someone else in his seat who would have been able to beat Rosberg or Bottas, he would be a 6x time champ. Or rosberg 7x time champ

  • Do they need him? No. Do they need him in 2022? Potentially, but are they willing to risk pitting a 38 year old against Max Vertappen if Redbull end up developing an equally as fast, or even faster car in 2022? Probably not. Will Hamilton risk his legacy by staying beyond 2021 when there is a very real risk of Mercedes losing the dominance they have enjoyed since 2014? Not on your nelly.

    Ben BenboiBen Benboi2 kuukautta sitten
  • I don't think that Hamilton played an important role in 2013. The case of McLaren or Ferrari in 2009 is a good example showing that spending efforts for the following year late cost a fight for the championship (very slow at the beginning, winning races at the end of the season). At the end of 2014, Mercedes remained clearly dominant and that was mainly thanks to the engine.

  • If Mercedes doesn’t need Lewis and it’s all about their car and any driver can be champion in that car, what are they waiting for? Mercedes is a rich and big team and you know they can buy out any driver. You mentioned George, Mercedes knows he lacks experience as you did say why would they want to put him as a driver when he could not beat Bottas and came 9th in the championship car? George needs to do what Lewis did to Mercedes when Lewis joined it. I remember how Jenson won at McLaren when Lewis was his teammate he had a better and mature way of driving and handling the car, the rest of the young one like Max, Charles etc just drive and destroy the car to prove they are great and give the viewers a show at the expense of the car reliability. Second Mercedes can afford to pay Lewis, Lewis is British we love a good bargain and we gamble or take our chances that’s us. As you know we are all working with rumours and speculations, I think if there is any issues with the contract it would be it’s duration and He might have signed already as you know he has a good relationship with Toto.

AS I have stated before, Best Team , Best Car , Best Technical Support , Unlimited Finance , and George Russell proved HE can be as fast as anybody in the Mercedes .Hamilton is overpaid and its all about him. "Look at Me Look at Me " thats him all over.

    Jim LightJim Light2 kuukautta sitten
  • Why would Mercedes take the risk of putting an inexperienced George Russell in that car when they know Hamilton will deliver the continued consistency he has throughout his career that has won them seven world championships. 2021 may be a foregone conclusion, but 2022 isn't. I completely agree it is 2022 that may test Mercedes and when they will need Hamilton's experience and input. I would say that Mercedes need Hamilton more than he needs Mercedes. And for F1 limiting drivers' salaries and budgets, where does that happen in any other business? It is not drivers and teams that need to be controlled, it is the FIA itself, for it is they that are ruining this sport.

    Paul HowePaul Howe2 kuukautta sitten

    • Untrue they took his inputs on how he wanted the car to drive and took it from there. The reason of the reason why Lewis left and McLaren failed after he left is Whitmarsh wanted to guide the car under Buttons development.

      Panache AutomotivePanache AutomotiveUukausi sitten
    • @Jake M It's not as cut 'n' dry as that me boy. For starters, Nico was far better than Bottas is. For luncheon, Mercedes suffered some terrible luck in 2020 on Bottas' side of the garage. For dinner, Mercedes were so unbelievably far ahead in 2020 that they completely took their foot off the gas about half way through the season to better prepare for 2021. The gap in qualifying was a second, consistently, for the majority of the 2020 season and up until they stopped development. If that is what a 'closing of the gap' looks like then I don't want it. :'D P.S. there were only 17 races in 2020. You can safely assume that had there been another two races to match the 19 of 2014, then Mercedes would have won both (50 Points), and finished at least 2nd and 3rd with Bottas (33 points). 50 + 33 = 83, and 83 + 573 = 656. Remove a touch of bad luck and poor performance from Bottas and you have your 701, at least.

      Ben BenboiBen Benboi2 kuukautta sitten
    • @Ben Benboi 2014 Mercedes 701 points from 19 races. 2020 Mercedes 573 points from 18 races.

  • If they have the money they will pay it is the reality I would think, personally I would give George or Lando norris the seat as these lads are the future of F1 as are Max and Charles, then use the balance if available for upgrades and ongoing development to stay at top of the tree and lets face it mercedes will be one of the main engine suppliers, so lets supply inferior engines to the other teams to ensure stay at top lol ( i am sure that would not happen obviously) but you cannot tell me the mercedes team engine does not have additional mapping that the others do not have to ensure higher revs, more torque, more everything!! If they were all the same perhaps the racing might be closer, rather than continual catch up from the rest. lewis is at the top of his game and obviously he will push for the best deal he can get to fund retirement when it comes, thats human nature or a good manager lol

  • Ok, say it is a given Mercedes have an absolute monster of a car again for 2021 and win their 8th constructors title in a row. Stick George Russell in the car, he has a good chance of winning the championship, but specifically focusing on the history side and the fame and glory, having Lewis take his 8th drivers title with his background and where he came from and how he defied the odds of getting into F1 not being white etc and taking every record in the book with merc will go down in history as the greatest team and racing driver that ever raced in F1 before the regulation changes in 2022 change things up (possibly). I think what Hamilton and Merc need each other for the most is to cement their legacy, dynasty and rule over F1 in the turbo hybrid era. I love Lewis, he’s the reason I truly fell in love with him and F1 as a sport when I sat watching my first full Grand Prix all the way through on the tv during the final race at Brazil in 2008. Lewis certainly does not need to race anymore he’s done it all but win more championships than Michael. It really depends on how serious Mercedes and Lewis are about re writing the history books to probably never be repeated again.

  • George Russell proved a LOT . . . of nothing. Had a great qualification where Bottas was giving him tows and he didn’t gave Bottas tows when Hamilton does. And scored what? 3 or 2 points in the race? Always something happens. He has yet to score a single point for Williams after two seasons. Great talented drivers wildly overachieve from the start. The only top driver that didn’t impress in the first season was Alonso, but his second season was outstanding. Could be a good guy, but as driver, Russell has to prove something, before talking about him replacing Hamilton. In best case, he could MAYBE replace Bottas. Excellent in qualification, but a lot of mistakes and bad luck in races.

    TheGreatLocoTheGreatLoco2 kuukautta sitten
    • I think you can impress in that Williams and not score points. Sure, the points will come with time and yes Russell has made a number of mistakes. But during the Sakhir GP he was leading comfortably and able to manage the race. It wasn't his fault that he ended up dropping down the order, and even when he did he came back rapidly! So while I don't think he is at the level of Lewis just yet, I think we'll see him in the second seat very soon! Thanks for watching!
