2019 KTM 500 EXC-F - Ultimate 100 Hour Review and Impressions!

I rolled over 100 hours on my KTM 500 EXC, this may be a true torture test with all the wheelies, racing, and overall abuse. I start this video from my first impressions of rolling it off the showroom floor, to the maintenance, comfort, and more! I get asked alot if the 500 EXC-F is a good bike, if its reliable, if I wished I had got something else. Here's the video I answer all that and can direct someone to! To me, I truly believe this is THE ultimate dual sport motorcycle. I compare this bike to the husquvarna bikes and also the KTM 350 excf and 450 excf. Would this be a bike I would buy in the future, again? I bought this enduro, dual sport as an adventure bike, a supermoto, and a race bike. How it handles my abuse will prove to be the ultimate test! I talk some positives and negatives of the 500 excf, some things I like and some things I didn't. Enjoy this ultimate video of my 100 hour review and first impressions of my KTM 500 EXCF dual sport motorcycle! The best dual sport on the market! Want a comparison to other bikes? Let me know! What makes this dirt bike a dual sport? It's fully 50 state legal straight from the factory!

  • Love the channel, can you start listing in the description your mods by name. I've got a 2009 EXC 450 and probably have many of the same like alot of KTM owners. Midwest Mountain Engineering Levers which I think all KTM owners should do, best one finger clutch pulls. Cyclopes LED headlight kit (KTM is limited by AC powered lights vs industry standard DC, cyclopes LED works without changing the stator and rectifier) another great mod is FLO reusable oil filter, works better than one time use paper ones and has a magnet to catch shit, just wash it off and throw it back in, pays for itself quick considering KTM crazy maintenance schedule. Not use how good your stock battery is but I upgraded to an Antigravity Lithium Battery which has been amazing compared to lead acid 1/3 the weight and 2x the power. If you could basically list everything you've done, grips, tires, oil, handguards, air filter, FMF pipe, sprockets and tooth gearing, seat, bars, etc it would help a lot new riders looking to upgrade with aftermarket and not sure what to go with. One cheap and easy mod I think every bike owner should do is hook up a head & tail light kill switch, just a basic 5 dollar on/off switch that interrupts the negative feed to your lights making it easy to disappear at night when being chased and draw less attention when riding where you shouldn't. My next bike will definitely be the 2019 EXC 500 as its the last year to have the kickstart hole in the engine case, I know most people never need it but its nice to have the backup if your E-starter gets fucked and its saved my ass more than once.

    • I actually have a Walkaround video explaining everything I’ve got done to the bike. Only difference since that video is the Supermoto wheels and handbrake. Once I get a majority of what I want done to the bike yet I’ll make another updated video. I’ll try to also find a simplified way of putting most of the mods in the description though!

  • Dude! I have been so torn! I don’t like my r1, I can’t be a hooligan on it like my 450, but I need something highway capable, super moto was my goal but just can’t on the highway way, so 701 or 690, 625 lc4, hypermotard.. but then I can’t jump and do the crazy illegal stuff I would do.. 500 is what I need, I’m so sold

    • You won’t look back! The 500 is as Highway capable as your ass will let it be haha! If you plan to Highway it often, definitely invest into a seat concepts seat! 🤘🏼

  • You think this is a better supermoto than a Yz450f?

    Mike StackzMike Stackz2 kuukautta sitten
    • @CorkyCanStunt casual riding maybe a wheelie here and there lol

      Mike StackzMike Stackz2 kuukautta sitten
    • Depends on your riding style and what you want to do! Just around town or racing, the YZ may be an option. If you’re wanting an all around bike, the ktm would be the way to go. Wide ratio transmission, 6 speed, its lighter than the YZ, Factory street legal. But buying a new KTM EXCF you’ll have to uncork it to get the power, where as the YZ you wouldn’t. Hope that helps 🤘🏼

      CorkyCanStuntCorkyCanStunt2 kuukautta sitten
  • So I'm new to dirtbikes/ supermotos, I've ridden street bikes for 6 years now but I'm wanting to be able to "adventure" a little. Would you recommend starting with like a yz 250 or go straight for something like this?

    NinjaNinja3 kuukautta sitten
    • @CorkyCanStunt awesome, well I'm in the military and I'm about to head to Germany so there is alot of smaller back roads/alleyways and stuff like that so I may end up going with the 250 anyways. But I'll be looking forward to that video!

      NinjaNinja3 kuukautta sitten
    • Since you’re familiar with streets, it just depends on what you’re looking for and riding style you want. If you want that similar street bike basically zero maintenance, go for a drz400 or Wr250r or wr250x. If you want power and don’t mind oil changes get a 450 or 500. I just definitely wouldn’t recommend a 250 MX bike if your riding streets often! I got plans to make a video in the future breaking it all down!

      CorkyCanStuntCorkyCanStunt3 kuukautta sitten
  • Do you have a cush drive on the rear? It's said that without one and too many miles on road the splines of the front sprocket axle wear out. It's also not good for your transmission.

    C_R_O_M__________C_R_O_M__________3 kuukautta sitten
    • The torque from the motor can cause the transmission to wear in time, yeah. But I personally never experienced any long term trouble on a standard drive hub. Over 20k HARD miles on my old bike and no issues so I ordered my Supermoto wheels for this bike in standard hub 🤘🏼

      CorkyCanStuntCorkyCanStunt3 kuukautta sitten

  • Did you end up doing a higher hour/mileage review?? Any issues yet? Looking at grabbing a 500exc probably a little older model like a 16

    Dereck RodriguezDereck Rodriguez3 kuukautta sitten
    • @CorkyCanStunt fuck yeah!!! This is awesome. Gives me extreme comfort knowing these bikes are as reliable as it gets. Bc I was reading the service manual and it equAted to doing big Service at around 4700 miles. Seeing you’ve almost doubled without a hiccup is great I’m convinced Ima get a ktm 500exc. So from brand new until now just Valve checks? And no big service besides oil and filter

      Dereck RodriguezDereck Rodriguez3 kuukautta sitten
    • I have not made another review video, but have plans to soon! I’m around 250 hours and 7500 miles with no issues! Done nothing but oil changes and it’s solid even for seeing rev limiter more than it should 😂

    Dru DavisDru Davis4 kuukautta sitten
    • There’s not a huge difference between the 450 excf and the 500 excf. Me personally, I preferred the 500 for the maintenance. The 450 is dual overhead cam, and just basically an extra step on valve checks. Can’t go wrong with either bike though!

      CorkyCanStuntCorkyCanStunt4 kuukautta sitten
    • Also 450 six days or 500???

      Dru DavisDru Davis4 kuukautta sitten
    • @CorkyCanStunt Awesome! Tossing around the idea of a 500 supermoto commuter/weekend trail ride.

      Dru DavisDru Davis4 kuukautta sitten
    • Absolutely. The bike would do it everyday, no issues, no long term issues and never skip a beat at that speed. Ridden mine 3-4 hours at 70-85 mph speeds the whole way, several times. I can say if you plan to do any longer of a ride, save your ass and invest in a seat concept seat. Makes a huge difference in comfort on you! 💪🏼

    • What’s up man! I have ridden the 450L just for a short time, ridden it stock and when it was uncorked. I can say it’s a solid looking bike, and the 6th gear is so nice. Compared to the 500, it felt super bulky and “cluttered” in the dash area. It felt a good bit heavier but it also had Supermoto wheels where I don’t. I like them, but I’d still pick the 500 if I had to do it over again! 🤘🏼

    • For sure uncork that thing right away! A vortex ECU if you have the money for it. I ended up just getting the EJK tuner and air box funnel from the “ktm and husky” guys. The paper they send gives you exact tuning specs and they’re dialed. Other than that I have the Midwest Mountain Engineering lever, and I highly recommend it. Love the sound of the fmf, next for me is to get the megabomb header! I don’t have much else other than that! Happy with the route I went!

    Justin KaseJustin Kase6 kuukautta sitten
    • @CorkyCanStunt Duke wheels have been done, they go for around $400 new IIRC. The issue is that they are set up for 17mm axles so either spacers need to be made for a thinner axle to fit the forks or some sort of mods to the wheels for a larger axle.

      Justin KaseJustin Kase6 kuukautta sitten
    • I gotcha! Yeah it would definitely be convenient to have both! I’m looking to get sumo wheels in the near future, hopefully duke wheels would work! I haven’t heard of anyone trying that!

      CorkyCanStuntCorkyCanStunt6 kuukautta sitten
    • @CorkyCanStunt Thanks. I'm debating buying a supermoto setup for my 500 xcf-w or just going enduro/DS. The thing is I will be using my bike on my short commute and mainly doing street...maybe if I can figure out how to use cheap Duke wheels it will make more sense to have both options available. Definitely getting a set of DOT knobbies though.

      Justin KaseJustin Kase6 kuukautta sitten
    • I’ve been switching up tires trying different ones. Currently running Dunlop at81’s front and rear. Really like them off-road and they’ve been wearing pretty slow on roads! I don’t run rim locks, when I adventure ride I just run more air pressure. Been across Colorado and Utah without them!

I haven’t ridden one, but they are heavier and I wouldn’t want to do too much off-roading with one. I would consider this a huge safety upgrade and style as well... so in my book it’s always function over form... but in this case it’s the best of both worlds

    BillBill8 kuukautta sitten
    • I haven’t had a single issue with my 500! I’ve got almost 200 hours on it now, of dual sport riding or just riding it as hard as I can and it hasn’t skipped a beat. When I went to Colorado last, I actually did almost 40 hours between oil changes and shifting did start to get a little clunky feeling. Changed the oil when I got home, and it’s smooth as butter instantly!

      CorkyCanStuntCorkyCanStunt8 kuukautta sitten
    • @CorkyCanStunt thats good to hear that itll last ya that long if oil n filters is done roughly everyone 30hrs. have you come across any common issues with them? im looking for a dual sport sumo that i can stunt this sounds perfect!

      BillBill8 kuukautta sitten
    • I’ve got a video coming next answering all that, just having trouble getting it posted. You can push service intervals on the excf, and I’m sure you can a little on the sxf as well if you’re riding mostly street. I do oil changes, filter changes every 20-25 hours. As far as top ends, I’ve done some research and know there’s the rental ktm bikes out west getting 800 hours out of them!

    • Thank you! That doesn’t sound like a bad deal for a 19! Honestly it comes down to how you plan to ride it though! I’ve ridden 300’s but haven’t ridden an EFI yet. If you plan to street ride mostly, get the EXCF. It’ll do everything from technical riding in the woods to cruising the highway for hours at a time. If you’re wanting to do like 90% off-road riding you’ll really enjoy that 300! The 300 just has so much bottom end and rides so different than any other 2 stroke, I don’t know how well you could count on it for everyday road use, but for wheelies it would be a blast! I’ve got a yz250 I use for woods and wheelies, just find myself trucking it most the time I want to ride it! 🤘🏼

  • Hey, not sure if you will see this but I had a few questions. I was thinking of getting this bike and wanted to know what the mileage on a bike like this is like. I will be using it as mostly an all-around bike, using it on the road sometimes and on the trails and off-road the rest of the time. Also, can you make a video showing the maintenance or direct me to a video of it? (if you can find one). Thanks.

  • Debating on if I should get a 450 ktm or a 500, I’m a beginner but my bud that rides told me if I get a bike I should go ahead and get a 450 or more because I’m going to out grow a smaller bike like a 250 of sort.. now I’m a pretty tall dude standing 6’3 but I’m kind of on the light side weighing in at 160 pounds... my question to you is whenever I do decide to grab my dirt bike would it be better for me to get a 500 or a 450 or less ?... pls help do not know which way to go

    Splash BrotherSplash Brother9 kuukautta sitten
    • I'm in this position now and I'm going 500, but it depends on your goals. The 500 is better on the street due to the torque, but some people say that roque makes it harder to modulate off-road or stunting. The 450 has a sharper throttle response which some people really like for off-road or stunting. Additionally, it feels a little heavier than the 450 on tight tracks even though they weight about the same, because of rotational mass. I personally think they are more robust, probably due to the lower revs. If you want torque, the 500 is the way and if you want to rev out the 450 is the way. I know how to clutch in cars, having owned a stick shift, so I hope that helps me a bit on the bike. Start slow... Anyway, they didn't make the bikes I want in 450 for 2020, so I only have 500s as a choice if I'm shopping for deals on NOS 2020s.

    • It kinda depends on a lot to really nail an answer in for you. Do you have any clutch experience? Do you plan to ride roads or learn to wheelie? If you’re comfortable, definitely bite the bullet and get a 450 or 500, you’ll appreciate it way more in the long run. But if you’re learning clutch, or wanting to learn to wheelie, the WR250R or WR250X would be the move! I love my 250x, it’s not totally gutless, and it’s a 6 speed wise ratio trans. Either way, you have to learn the same steps and both bikes go slow enough to learn on. I’d agree with your buddy, but also think about what you want to do with it in the future! 🤘🏼 thanks for watching! 🔥

  • so you mean u changed the suspension and lowered it? im a short guy and i find it difficult balancing on my ktm 450 when stopping or enduro..thanks

    Mr DeadpoolMr Deadpool11 kuukautta sitten
    • I was more saying that it didn’t particularly bother me but does play a factor. Sometimes I get caught at a weird angle on a hill and either drop the bike or almost do. If this was my only bike, I’d lower it a couple inches and get the suspension setup for me. That always makes a huge difference in a bike!

    • @Cody Goik that’s great to hear man! I’ve only been down once in a street bike and it kinda sucked. Thanks for the info. I’d really be interested in hearing what you end up figuring out what the issue is for your bike.

      Dereck RodriguezDereck Rodriguez3 kuukautta sitten
    • @Dereck Rodriguez i got lucky, had a great helmet and that saved my ass. but i’m back to 100! thanks man. and i’ve had a few hiccups. 2 fuel pumps at this point. valves were done twice. and currently i have quite a bit of metal shavings appearing in my oil. not sure what the cause behind that is, still it’s pretty recent so i’m troubleshooting now. it’s a daily bike for me, i drive it to work and back. the occasional foolin around and poppin wheelies but not really ragging on it like if i had it off-road. the oil gets changed every 2 weeks and work is only 11 miles away so it’s not going over 25 miles a day. so just trying to make sense of this issue now.

      Cody GoikCody Goik3 kuukautta sitten
    • @Cody Goik damn sorry to hear hope you feeling better , did you have any hiccups or bug services done by 300hiurs?

      Dereck RodriguezDereck Rodriguez3 kuukautta sitten
    • @Dereck Rodriguez her and i both were down for a bit, got hit head on by a SXS, twisted the frame and bent the forks. it’s back together now and sitting somewhere near 300 hours and 3k miles

  • Sorry for the really obvious question. But the acceleration at 1:21. Does it feel fast??

    Daelin LisDaelin Lis11 kuukautta sitten
    • Without a doubt the fastest bike I’ve ridden. I just have a tune and air box opened and it pulls on any 450 MX bike. It has a powerband feel to it, super controllable and roll on power. You roll onto 3rd at any rpm or speed and the front end comes up. Power wheelies 5th if I time it right down low, up high 80 mph clutch ups!

    Phil2ridePhil2ride11 kuukautta sitten
    • @CorkyCanStunt yeah, just take a look on Aaron Steinman RTW story or Motonomad movies. They sure are capable adv bikes..

    • Yo that’s awesome to hear! I planned to buy sumo wheels before anything else when I first got mine also. But I really don’t feel a need to be in a hurry to buy some right now. Thinking the adventure bike route would be so fun on this platform of a bike!
